What are the main components of LIDARs?

    Can somebody provide a technical description of the the LIDAR main components?

    A LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) system consists of 4 key components:

    1. A transmitter to emit laser pulses
    2. A receiver to intercept pulse echoes
    3. An optical analyzing system to process input data
    4. A powerful computer to visualize a live, three-dimensional image of the system’s surroundings.

    This technology was originally developed by NASA and the U.S. military 45 years ago to track lunar and satellite distances.

    Self-driving technology is expensive. Google car cost would be $60k-$70k if it was for sale. Good LiDARs costs around $8k even though SSD technology (the same of Hard drives) would definitely bring the cost under $1k. If there is market demand, cost is decreased and that's why we can finally have self-driving car mass production.
